McConnell Criticizes Media for Coverage of Sexual Assault Allegations Against Biden

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is ripping into the media for its coverage of sexual assault allegations against Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden.

“Well, at the very least it’s pretty obvious that the same people who were outraged about allegations — unproven allegations against Justice Kavanaugh when he was in high school seemed to have little or no interest,” McConnell said during an interview on Fox News Radio on Monday.

He continued, “I think if — these things ought to be dealt with symmetrically no matter who the accuser is and no matter who the accused is. I think what most Americans would like is sort of a symmetrical evaluation of these allegations rather than what we have seen at least so far.”

Biden has been accused by former Senate staffer, Tara Reade, of sexual assault, as IJR has previously reported.

Biden’s campaign has denied those allegations.

Reade made her allegation public in March, and some in the media have focused on what they say is a lack of attention Reade has received in national news outlets.

They have compared the treatment of the allegations against Biden to the accusations of sexual assault made against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

“Why is the paper of record now declining to publicize a very troubling allegation against former Vice President Joe Biden?” Reason’s Robby Soave asked in an article examining the media’s coverage of Reade’s allegations.

And many pundits have accused the media of holding a double-standard when it comes to sexual assault allegations made against Republicans and Democrats.

“Kavanaugh was already in a public forum in a large way. Kavanaugh’s status as a Supreme Court justice was in question because of a very serious allegation,” Dean Baquet, the executive editor of The New York Times, said when asked about the coverage of Kavanaugh’s allegations compared to those against Biden.

He continued, “If you ask the average person in America, they didn’t know about the Tara Reade case. So I thought in that case, if The New York Times was going to introduce this to readers, we needed to introduce it with some reporting and perspective. Kavanaugh was in a very different situation. It was a live, ongoing story that had become the biggest political story in the country. It was just a different news judgment moment.”

The apparent lack of coverage of the allegations has become somewhat of a bipartisan issue. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said it is “legitimate” to talk about the allegations, as IJR has previously reported

“If we again want to have integrity, you can’t say, you know — both believe women, support all of this, until it inconveniences you, until it inconveniences us,” she said.

Additionally, former staffers for Sen. Bernie Sanders‘ (I-Vt.) campaign voiced frustration at the lack of attention the allegations have received.

  1. Sexual assault allegations against presidential candidates were decided in the 2016 election. The decision was that a male candidate could be accused by 24 women and it was not disqualifying. WHAT was decided to be disqualifying is if the SPOUSE of the candidate has been accused. So, has Melania or Jill been accused of sexual harassment or assault.

ALSO decided was serial infidelity. If a candidate has cheated on all 3 of his spouses, that is acceptable. What is not acceptable is if the spouse of the candidate has been unfaithful.

The 2016 election also decided the issue of corruption. A candidate for President can have an extensive rap sheet of fines for federal & state crimes as well as industry regulation violations. A candidate can NOT have unfounded conspiracies repeatedly disproven. A candidate CAN have a public record of hundreds of lawsuits for non-payment of services and 2 class action lawsuits for fraud. The Republican 2020 primary tells us that a candidate that settled the fraud lawsuits for $22 million and fined $2 million for stealing from his own charity is still acceptable to Republicans.

The 2016 election decided in favor of the candidate with recordings of bragging to Access Hollywood and Howard Stern of “grabbing women by the pussy” and knowingly walking in on teenage contestants while they are undressing. Those are not disqualifying.

ALSO not disqualifying are not releasing taxes, not testifying in person in the Mueller investigation, COMMITTING impeachable offenses, and lying to the American public over 18,000 times since taking office.

The 2016 election had consequences, just like all actions we make in life. Life time appointments to the SCOTUS having sexual assault accusations is acceptable. That is life, folks. You can always play the BLAME OBAMA card, but that won’t fly. Obama told you to vote for Hillary.

The media wouldn’t mention the Biden allegations because they were complicit with the DNC who did not want ANYTHING to interefere with them getting rid of Bernie Sanders ASAP.

It was predictable that the order of things would transpire in this way, and here we are. The DNC and the media don’t want to have anything interrupt their cozy little deal – always keep the money flowing, first and foremost. Can’t have a little sexual assault allegation interfere with THAT.

    1. If this was about money, WHY would the DNC not support Bloomberg, Buttigieg or Sanders?? The Biden campaign wasn’t the one with MONEY! You are sounding as if you have adopted Trumpism logic. WHAT did the DNC do resulting in Bernie to be over 300 pledged delegates behind?? The delegates are awarded BY ELECTION RESULTS. WHAT contests did Bernie win that the DNC declared Biden the winner?? For god’s sake, even Obama did not endorse Biden until Bernie announced he was ending his campaign.

Reade’s sexual assault allegation was made on March 25, 2020 in a podcast and on March 26, 2020 Reade filed a report with the DC police asserting a 1993 sexual assault BUT the report does NOT NAME Joe Biden. The podcast and the police report were both reported by the NYT. The April 12th reporting states that they interviewed Ms. Reade and she told them she filed a complaint with the Senate but did not have a copy. They contacted the Senate and were told the Senate had NO RECORD of her complaint.

      1. You don’t seem to understand how the DNC operates. They don’t really care if they win or lose an election. They are quite content to play the role of opposition, if necessary, if it helps keeping those almighty donations rolling in. They have done it before, they will do it again.

        “The 2016 election had consequences”

        Thank you. 😉

        1. PLEASE, please tell me how Bernie’s fantasy plans pass Congress. Is it magical power like Trump had to have Mexico pay for his wall and Iran to renegotiate the Nuclear Deal?
If the Democrat electorate thought of the 20 candidates to choose from, Bernie was their choice, WHY do you perceive he is 300 earned delegates BEHIND Biden? Did the DNC prohibit ANYONE eligible from donating to Bernie’s campaign? Did you get a message from the DNC in 2016 or 2020 instructing you NOT to vote for Bernie? Did the DNC exclude Bernie from the debates? Did the DNC make Bernie praise Castro and refuse to respond when asked if Maduro was a dictator? Did the DNC prevent Bernie from convincing no more than 13 of his fellow Senators to support M4A, or $15 federal wage, or GND? YOU sound like Trump blaming everyone else for Bernie’s failures. I get it, you wanted Bernie. I wanted Sen. Michael Bennet to be the nominee or at least the VP, but I do not need to blame ANYONE in order to get over it and support Biden.

In what world would the DNC prefer to remain in opposition??? On what are you basing that assertion? If fund raising is not one of the main functions of the DNC and RNC, WHAT is it that you perceive the DNC & RNC do?

          1. If the DNC WANTED to win, they wouldn’t try to sideline Sanders.

You don’t get it. The DNC is prepared to lose against King Donald The Loser and stay in opposition. They do NOT want to upset the establishment. That is why the progressive left is so important. We MUST enact change throughout the system.

Ad for getting policies enacted? We have to start somewhere or we get nothing that we need. I keep telling you this, but ya just won’t learn. You are too conservative for you own good.

          1. Your views DON’T DESERVE support and encouragement. You have NOTHING to back them up. Come to a gunfight with a knife, GUESS who loses.

      1. “Yeah, the bias leans towards money more than anything else.” Your own stupid comment, skippy.
