Klobuchar and Buttigieg Spar Over Her Forgetting the Name of the Mexican President

Presidential hopefuls Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Pete Buttigieg revived their feud during the Democratic debate in Nevada.

In an interview on Feb 13. with Telemundo, Klobuchar, and fellow candidate Tom Steyer were unable to recall the name of the Mexican president.

During the debate, Klobuchar said it was an “error” and argued that being able to admit she forgot his name is a sign of humility.

“I said that I made an error. I think having a president that maybe is humble and is able to admit that here and there maybe wouldn’t be a bad thing.”

The moderator interrupted Klobuchar to give Buttigieg a chance to respond to her defense.

“You’re staking your candidacy on your Washington experience,” Buttigieg said. “You’re on the committee that oversees border security. You’re on the committee that does trade.”

He added, “You’re literally part of the committee that’s overseeing these things. And we’re not able to speak to literally the first thing about the politics of the country to our south.”

“Are you trying to say that I’m dumb? Or are you mocking me here, Pete?” Klobuchar shot back, adding, “I said I made an error, people sometimes forget names.”

She continued to tout her success in her elections and ripped into Buttigieg’s electoral record, “I am the one — not you — that has won statewide in congressional district after congressional district.”

“And, I will say, when you tried in Indiana, Pete, to run. What happened to you? You lost by over 20 points to someone who later lost to my friend Joe Donnelly,” she added.

Buttigieg shot back, invoking failed 1984 Democratic presidential nominee Walter Mondale who lost in a landslide to Ronald Reagan, “If winning a race for Senate in Minnesota translated directly to becoming president I would have grown up under the presidency of Walter Mondale.”

After that, several candidates tried to infuse themselves into the conversation which led moderator Lestor Holt to interject, “Hello, hello, hello, hello, thank you,” to regain control of the stage.

Klobuchar and Buttigieg have previously sparred over each other’s experience and preparedness to be president during the debates.
