Trump Jr.’s Axios on HBO interview on Sunday highlighted a number of political points. From the coronavirus to the Democratic primary, Trump Jr. offered his perspective on certain points while doubling down on his opinion in other areas.
One of the key points in the interview centered around Trump Jr. being asked about former Vice President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden.
Trump Jr. — the president’s eldest son— touched on his desire to have a debate with Hunter Biden to shed light on who has made more money off their father’s government service.
Over the years, there have been reports about Trump Jr. and his siblings’ careers being built on his father’s legacy and financial foundation.
While he does admit that he has benefited from the Trump name, he argues that he was a successful businessman prior to his father being elected.
“I was an international business person before my father got into politics. That’s what we did. I’m not going to say I haven’t benefited from my father’s last name, just like Hunter Biden did. That’d be foolish to say. But, I haven’t benefited from my father’s tax-payer funded office.”
As for Hunter Biden, Trump Jr. believes he actually did benefit from his father’s time in office. Therefore, he is proposing a debate for the purpose of transparency.
“We can go full transparency, we show everything, and we can talk about all of the places where I am supposedly grifting but Hunter Biden isn’t,” Trump Jr. said.
Asked if he would release his tax returns, Trump Jr. responded, “If we do it both, 100%.”
“Let’s talk about who profited off of whose public service. Happy to do it. Let’s make it happen.”

After the interview aired, Trump took to Twitter to reiterate his stance.
He tweeted, “The [Mainstream Media] loves making a false equivalency between us, so let’s settle it: I challenge Hunter Biden to man up & debate me [Jim VandeHei] moderates.”
He continued with another challenge. “Hunter releases his tax returns & I release mine. Let’s have an open convo about who really profited from their father’s public office!”

Trump Jr.’s Axios interview follows a series of reports detailing the speculation around Hunter Biden’s business affiliation with a Ukrainian energy company during his father’s tenure as vice president.
Initially, the reports about Hunter Biden’s business dealings had waned but Joe Biden’s endorsement surge has been a game-changer. The former vice president is also currently the front-runner in the Democratic primary.
Hunter Biden has yet to respond to Trump Jr.’s challenge.
