Democrats Criticize Trump for Authorizing Strike That Killed Iran’s Top General

After news that one of Iran’s top military commanders was killed in a U.S. airstrike in Baghdad, several Democrats voiced their concern that the move could further escalate tensions with Tehran and increases the risk of armed conflict.

On Thursday, Qasim Soleimani — the commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force — was killed in an airstrike near Baghdad International Airport.

In a statement, the Department of Defense said President Donald Trump authorized the strike that morning.

“At the direction of the President, the U.S. military has taken decisive defensive action to protect U.S. personnel abroad by killing Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force, a U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization.”

The strike comes two days after hundreds of protesters stormed the U.S. embassy compound in Baghdad, and vowed to stay camped outside the compound until American personnel left the country. But they shortly left without accomplishing their goal.

In the aftermath of the protests at the embassy, the Defense Department sought to deter any future attacks on American personnel or interests.

Defense Secretary Mark Esper told reporters on Thursday morning that the U.S. is “prepared to do what is necessary to defend our personnel and our interests and our partners in the region,” as IJR has previously reported

While some Congressional Republicans cheered the news of Soleimani’s death, Congressional Democrats and presidential contenders voiced their concerns about the potential fallout of the strike.

Check out the reactions below:

After the strike, Iran vowed to seek “severe revenge” for the death of Soleimani.

  1. Guess the DemocRATs are not familiar with the 1973 War Powers Act giving the POTUS the authority to take action; then, notify Congress (as he has done). OR, maybe because his name is Donald John Trump – a Republican, he needs the DemocRAT’s permission to go to the bathroom.

  2. Two replies below are now invisible. Thanks, but you went unheard.

    1. Why worry your little head about it? You can rest assured in your crib they weren’t UP votes for any of your usual idiocy.

  3. They attack our embassy. Should we say thank you may I have another? I don’t want war either but you can’t let them get away with this. I think we should just leave and let them fight it out. But hurt our people we will fight back. We have to make everyone understand that you need to respect the USA. Like us or not. We are the greatest country on this earth. How do we know? Because USA citizens who criticize this have the right to do so.

  4. The left, DS, global America haters from within are gonna do what they do. Now people can see it. Trump has changed the way things work. They used to hide. He compels them to out themselves more each day.

  5. It is amazing that a pre-emptive strike against the head of Iran’s terror network upon discovery of an active plot to kill American citizens is politically polarizing.

Whenever you take the opposite side of literally ANYTHING one person does, regardless of what it is, you are no longer using the logic side of your brain. If you hate your ex-wife you will assign maximum ill intent no matter what her actions. She hugs your kids because she wants to make you look like a less loving dad. She gives to charity because she wants to make you look selfish, etc.

If you find yourself either fully supporting or fully opposed to anything Pres. Trump does, I strongly encourage you to disengage your emotional attachment and move back to calling balls and strikes.
